The Marshall University Foundation has announced a gift of $25,000 to establish the Michael and Diane McCarthy Yeager Scholars Endowment.
The scholarship is generously endowed by Michael “Mike” McCarthy, vice president of information services for Marshall Health Network, and his wife Diane McCarthy, a fellow Marshall alumna and a graduate of the Lewis College of Business.
“We were both Marshall students together and we both benefitted from what the university has been able to provide for us. Not just at a professional level, but at a personal level as well.
“A university education is not merely vocational training. It really is meant to inspire a life-long commitment to intellectual pursuits. The faculty members that I had at Marshall certainly did that,” Mike McCarthy said.
Mike McCarthy is a graduate of the inaugural Society of Yeager Scholars class of 1991, obtaining his bachelor’s degree and later his master’s degree in history from Marshall. He has worked in the healthcare information technology field at the Marshall University Joan C. Edwards School of Medicine since 1992 and currently serves as the school’s chief information officer.
Diane McCarthy graduated from the College of Business in 1989 with a bachelor’s degree in marketing. Diane McCarthy currently works at MISTRAS Group at its South Point, Ohio, location.
This fund will support the students in the Society of Yeager Scholars program.
“The Yeager program thrives because of generous donors like Mike and Diane McCarthy,” said Cara Bailey, assistant dean of the Honors College and director of the Society of Yeager Scholars program. “As an alumnus from our very first class of Yeager Scholars, Mike knows firsthand how the program empowers students and transforms lives. Seeing our alumni give back to the very program that shaped their journey is deeply meaningful and sincerely appreciated.”
